Private Charter Questions
Common questions before your trip
What is Island Adventures in Islamorada?
Island Adventures is a veteran-owned private boat charter company in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Captain Jim and the Island Adventures team specialize in private snorkeling charters , Islamorada Sandbar trips, private sunset cruises , custom multi-activity charters , and larger-group trips arranged with two boats when available.
Who is Captain Jim at Island Adventures?
Captain Jim is the lead operator of Island Adventures in Islamorada and a U.S. Air Force veteran. His approach is built around private, personalized Florida Keys boat trips, local conditions, guest comfort, and choosing the best practical plan for the day rather than forcing every group into the same itinerary.
Are Island Adventures boat tours private?
Yes. Your charter is reserved for your group rather than mixed with unrelated guests. Standard single-boat charters are designed for 1–6 guests, giving families, couples, and small groups more flexibility than a crowded public tour.
What private boat tours do you offer in Islamorada?
Island Adventures offers private snorkeling charters , private Islamorada Sandbar charters , private sunset cruises , custom multi-activity boat trips, and larger-group charters. The best trip depends on your group, available time, swimming comfort, and the actual conditions that day.
Where do Island Adventures charters depart from?
Trips depart from Safe Harbor Angler House Marina at 80500 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, Florida 33036. The marina offers private on-site parking, convenient dock access, restrooms, showers, a pool, a tiki area, and fresh water. Guests should follow the current pickup instructions and allow extra travel time because traffic around the Snake Creek drawbridge can occasionally cause delays.
How many guests can go on a private charter?
A standard Island Adventures charter boat accommodates 1–6 guests. Groups of 7–12 may be accommodated with two boats and two captains when available. Larger-group arrangements require advance confirmation because two-boat availability is more limited.
Why choose a private snorkeling charter instead of a big snorkel boat?
A private snorkeling charter lets your group move at its own pace without sharing the boat with strangers. The captain can adjust the location, water time, pace, and activity mix for children, first-time snorkelers, nervous swimmers, experienced snorkelers, and mixed-age groups instead of keeping everyone on a large public-tour schedule.
Where do your private snorkeling tours go?
Possible Islamorada snorkeling locations include Alligator Reef Lighthouse, Cheeca Rocks, Hen and Chickens Reef, and protected bayside or nearshore sites. The captain chooses the best practical location based on wind, waves, visibility, current, tide, travel time, guest ability, and safety.
Is Alligator Reef Lighthouse guaranteed on a snorkeling charter?
No. Alligator Reef Lighthouse is an exposed offshore destination, so it is only used when conditions are appropriate. A protected reef, rock wall, jetty, or other location may provide a safer and more enjoyable snorkel on a particular day.
Are your Islamorada snorkeling tours good for beginners?
Yes, when conditions are appropriate. A private charter gives first-time snorkelers time to get comfortable, practice breathing through the snorkel, use flotation when instructed, enter the water gradually, and return to the boat without holding up a large public group.
Can non-swimmers come on a snorkeling charter?
Yes. No one is required to snorkel. Some guests may remain aboard, spend less time in the water, or choose a different activity. The captain has final authority over water entry and may require flotation or a life jacket when appropriate.
Are private charters good for families and children?
Yes. Private charters work well for families because the pace can be adjusted around children, grandparents, beginners, breaks, snacks, and swimming comfort. Shorter snorkel sessions, calmer locations, sandbar time, and staying aboard are all possible depending on the trip and conditions.
What is included on an Island Adventures boat charter?
Depending on the assigned boat and trip, typical onboard equipment includes USCG-approved safety equipment, life jackets, Bimini shade, adult-size snorkel gear, a cooler with ice, a Bluetooth speaker, and water toys such as tubes, a floating mat, or a stand-up paddleboard. Equipment can vary by boat, maintenance status, weather, trip type, and safety considerations.
What should I bring on a private boat charter?
Bring a swimsuit, towel, reef-conscious sun protection, hat, polarized sunglasses, water, light snacks, and any personal medication you may need. A rash guard or lightweight long-sleeve shirt, dry clothes, waterproof phone pouch, and camera are also useful. Avoid overpacking because boat storage is limited.
Can we bring food and drinks?
Yes. Guests may bring their own food and drinks, and a cooler with ice is normally available. Water and simple snacks are a good choice. Confirm current rules for glass, alcohol, catering, or special celebration items before arrival, and responsible alcohol use is expected.
What happens on a private Islamorada Sandbar charter?
A typical private sandbar charter cruises from the marina to the Islamorada Sandbar, where your group can relax in shallow water, swim, float, socialize, and use available water toys such as a paddleboard or floating mat. The exact route, water depth, crowd level, and appearance of the sandbar vary with tide, wind, weather, and boat traffic.
Is the Islamorada Sandbar itself private?
No. Your Island Adventures boat and charter are private, but the Islamorada Sandbar is a public boating destination. Weekends and holidays can be busy. A private charter gives your group control over its own boat, music, pace, and atmosphere even when other boats are present.
Can we snorkel and visit the Islamorada Sandbar on the same trip?
Often, yes. A four-hour private charter usually provides the best opportunity to combine snorkeling and sandbar time because there is more room for travel, multiple activities, and weather adjustments. Transit time and conditions still determine what can realistically fit into one trip.
What is a private sunset cruise like?
Island Adventures offers private sunset cruising on Florida Bay with departure timed around the season's sunset. It is a relaxed private trip for couples, families, celebrations, and small groups. A cloud-free sunset cannot be guaranteed, but the captain plans the route around current conditions and the best available view.
Can we create a custom private boat day?
Yes. Custom multi-activity charters can prioritize snorkeling, sandbar time, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, relaxed cruising, photography, or other compatible activities. The final plan is built around your priorities, trip length, travel time, and the real conditions that day.
How long should we book: two, three, or four hours?
Two hours works best for one primary activity or a quick nearby outing. Three hours allows a more relaxed pace and additional flexibility. Four hours is usually the best choice for a snorkel-and-sandbar combination, multiple activities, or groups that do not want to feel rushed.
What happens if the weather changes?
Florida Keys conditions can change quickly. The captain may change the destination, use a more protected side of the islands, adjust the activity order, recommend a different departure time, shorten the trip, or cancel when safety requires it. Safety and the actual conditions take priority over a promised location.
Are specific reefs, clear water, sunsets, or wildlife guaranteed?
No. Island Adventures does not guarantee a particular reef, visibility level, water color, empty sandbar, cloud-free sunset, or wildlife sighting. Dolphins, turtles, rays, sharks, manatees, and other wildlife are natural encounters, not staged attractions.
What if someone in our group gets motion sickness?
Tell the captain before departure. Guests who are prone to motion sickness may want to follow product directions or medical guidance for appropriate medication, eat a light meal, stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, and look toward the horizon. A more protected route may be possible when conditions allow.
Can guests with mobility concerns go on a charter?
Boat boarding and water entry require some mobility. Guests with mobility concerns should contact Island Adventures before booking so the team can discuss dock conditions, boarding steps, seating, shade, water entry, restroom timing, and whether the assigned boat and activity can be adapted. Do not assume the trip is fully ADA-accessible without direct confirmation.
How do deposits, cancellations, and refunds work?
A deposit is required for reservations, and guests may also choose to pay in full. Because booking terms can change, the current cancellation, refund, rescheduling, and payment terms shown during checkout and in the written booking confirmation govern the reservation.
How much do Island Adventures private charters cost?
Pricing depends on the trip type, duration, group arrangement, and current offering. For accurate live pricing and availability, use the official Island Adventures reservation system rather than relying on an older third-party listing or cached search result.
How do I check current availability or reserve a charter?
Use the official Island Adventures reservation system to check current trip options, live pricing, and availability. For special requests, larger groups, mobility questions, or same-day questions, contact Island Adventures directly .
